IB Extended Essay Summer Classes
This 3-week IB Extended Essay course gives students focused time to work on their essay with expert guidance from experienced teachers. With access to one of the world’s best research libraries, students will take part in a range of engaging workshops to give them the skills and confidence needed to make significant progress on their Extended Essay.
By the end of the course, they will leave with either a clear plan for completing their work or having finished a strong first or second draft to continue developing at home*.
Academic classes run for 3 hours every weekday morning and are paired with an elective class choice, allowing students to explore different interests and develop a well-rounded academic profile.
*This will depend on how much work students have already done on their essay before arriving at ISSOS.

What Students Will Learn
The IB Extended Essay is a vital part of the IB Diploma programme, and this course is designed to provide the structured support students need to tackle this challenging project. Students taking this class should be writing their essay in English and arrive with a topic that has already been approved by their school.
Throughout the 3 weeks, students will be led in a variety of skills workshops, covering things like choosing a research topic, formulating a strong research question, and essay structuring, aiming to give them the practical tools they need to work on their essay with confidence.
Students will also take part in supervised research sessions held in the University of St Andrews' Main Library, a world-class facility.
In addition, we will work on key academic writing skills, like how to assess and use sources, avoid plagiarism, and write clear, well-structured academic essays. A key focus will be on referencing and how to properly incorporate quotes into their work, making sure that students develop strong academic integrity.
By the end of the course, students will leave with a confident plan for completing their Extended Essay or a well-developed draft to continue working on independently.
