What Is the International Baccalaureate (IB)?

The International Baccalaureate (IB) is a globally recognised educational programme renowned for developing curious, knowledgeable and well-rounded students. It’s known for its academic rigour, focus on international-mindedness and emphasis on both personal and intellectual growth. Many students take the IB Diploma Programme (IBDP) in their final two years of school (usually ages 16–19), and it’s a popular choice for those aiming to study at top universities around the world.

The IB Diploma includes six subjects including languages, humanities, sciences, maths and the arts. But what makes it really unique is the IB Core, which consists of three key elements: Theory of Knowledge, Creativity, Activity, Service, and the Extended Essay.

What Is the IB Extended Essay?

The IB Extended Essay is one of the most challenging and rewarding parts of the IB Diploma Programme. It’s a chance for students to explore a topic of personal interest in real depth, through a piece of independent research. The final result is a formal, academic essay of up to 4,000 words.

Students choose their topic from one of the subjects they’re studying, anything from biology to business, literature to philosophy, and are supported by a supervisor who helps guide their research and writing. Regardless of what they are writing about for their IB Extended Essay topic, students learn valuable skills in critical thinking, academic writing and time management.

The Extended Essay is about developing curiosity, independence and a love of learning. It also gives students a real advantage when they reach university, where these skills are essential.

Why the IB and Extended Essay Matter

Completing the IB Diploma is a real achievement. It encourages students to become independent learners, global citizens and thoughtful communicators. The Extended Essay, in particular, often becomes one of the most memorable and meaningful parts of the IB journey, allowing students to explore something they’re truly passionate about.

For families and students considering the IB, understanding the Extended Essay is key, as well as a research project it’s a stepping stone to university-level thinking and a chance to discover what students are capable of when they’re encouraged to dig deeper.
