British Parliamentary (BP) Debate is one of the most popular and widely used debating formats at universities and schools around the world. It’s fast-paced, interactive, and lots of fun for both beginners and experienced debaters.
In BP Debate, a motion (a statement or topic that teams argue for or against in a debate round) is put forward that four teams debate in each round. Two teams on the side supporting the motion, and two teams against it. Each team has two speakers, and everyone delivers one timed speech. The teams are known as Opening Government, Opening Opposition, Closing Government and Closing Opposition.
The debate begins with the Opening teams laying out the key points in their arguments, and the Closing teams then build on the case with new ideas and thoughts. Speakers don’t just defend their own points, they also have to respond to earlier arguments, challenge the other side, and explain why their team's contribution was the most valid. This makes BP a lively, engaging format that rewards critical thinking, teamwork, and the ability to adapt quickly.
The motions can be serious or light-hearted, political or philosophical, and teams don’t know what the motion will be until just before the round starts. It’s a brilliant way to develop public speaking skills, quick thinking, build confidence, and learn how to express complex ideas clearly and persuasively.
Whether students are new to debating or have some experience already, BP is a brilliant format and builds valuable skills that will be useful in lots of different settings.
