For Finley, ISSOS wasn’t just a summer programme, it was an experience that spanned two continents and two unforgettable summers. Finley first joined ISSOS at Yale when he was 16, then returned to attend the St Andrews campus at 17.
“I chose ISSOS because I was looking for a summer programme that combined academics with fun and creativity instead of just lessons. The variety of classes and activities at ISSOS, along with the chance to meet students from all over the world, really stood out to me.”
From day one, ISSOS offered the perfect environment for both personal and academic growth. Whether he was diving into a filmmaking elective, working one-on-one with a mentor on his IB extended essay, or jumping into the energy of clan competitions, Finley made the most of everything ISSOS had to offer.
“One of my favourite parts was the Clan activities, as it was an opportunity for us all to get to know each other, and work towards the Clan Cup. Through all of the activities I made friends from who I am still in touch today. I also really loved the creative electives, especially filmmaking, which allowed me to explore something I'm passionate about in a supportive environment. Lastly, being able to work towards my extended essay with guided help from a mentor was very beneficial.”
Now in his final year of the IB Diploma Programme at Frankfurt International School, Finley is looking ahead but still thinking of ISSOS. “After graduating I would love to come back to ISSOS, however, not as a student, but as one of the photography media managers.”
He believes ISSOS equipped him with a range of valuable tools that go far beyond the classroom. “I do believe that ISSOS gave me skills that I will be able to use outside of the summer school. Whether it is the study skills I learned to help me succeed in my academic journey, or the skills learned through the clan events which will help my teamwork and leadership skills, ISSOS provided skills which will aid me for a long time.”
His advice for anyone attending for the first time? “Be open to everything! Try out activities you wouldn’t normally do and talk to people you’ve never met before. ISSOS gives us students the environment to step outside of your comfort zone. One should try to get involved in as many events as possible.”
And when asked to sum up his ISSOS experience: “In short, ISSOS was fun, inspiring and full of growth. It was so great to come to ISSOS, and immediately feel like family. From classes to electives and Clan Events, I was able to learn and grow, in a very fun and healthy environment.”
