Why Culturally Diverse Classrooms in Education Matter

In an increasingly connected world, students are growing up in a global community. The ability to understand different cultures, perspectives, and ways of thinking is becoming just as important as academic success. One of the most effective ways to encourage this is through diverse classrooms.

When students learn alongside peers from different countries and backgrounds, the classroom becomes a place where they don’t just gain knowledge, they develop a broader understanding of the world around them. These experiences help students grow into confident, open-minded individuals who are comfortable working with people from all walks of life.

At ISSOS, culturally diverse classrooms are at the heart of the summer school experience.

What are the benefits of diverse classrooms?

The benefits of diverse classrooms extend far beyond simply bringing together students from different backgrounds. A truly diverse learning environment encourages curiosity, discussion, and new ways of thinking.

Research continues to show how culturally diverse schools and classrooms can benefit all students. When students are exposed to different perspectives, they learn to think more critically and develop a deeper understanding of global issues.

Some of the key benefits include:

  • Broader perspectives Learning with students from around the world allows young people to hear ideas and experiences they might never encounter in their everyday lives. This encourages students to see topics from multiple viewpoints.

  • Stronger critical thinking When a classroom includes students with different cultural backgrounds, discussions naturally become richer and more thoughtful. Students are challenged to question assumptions and explore new ideas.

  • Greater empathy and understanding Sharing a learning environment with students from different cultures helps young people develop empathy and respect for others.

  • Preparation for a global future Universities and workplaces today are more international than ever. Learning in culturally diverse classrooms helps students become comfortable communicating and collaborating with people from around the world.

How ISSOS creates a truly international experience

At ISSOS, creating a genuinely international community is a priority. Each summer, students join ISSOS from over 100 nationalities, creating classrooms that reflect a wide range of cultures and perspectives.

To ensure a balanced environment, ISSOS limits places so that no more than 10% of students come from any one nationality. This means that no single nationality dominates and students are encouraged to mix with peers from all over the world. Whether students attend the St Andrews summer school in Scotland or the Cambridge summer school in England, they become part of a truly international community. In the classroom, this diversity leads to more engaging discussions and new perspectives. Outside the classroom, it creates an environment where students naturally form friendships with people they might otherwise never have met.

The result: friendships without borders

One of the most meaningful outcomes of diverse classrooms is the friendships that develop between students from different countries. During their time at ISSOS, students live, learn, and take part in activities together. These shared experiences help students build strong connections that often continue long after the summer ends. Many students stay in touch with their new friends across different continents, creating an international network at a young age. For many families, this global community becomes one of the most memorable parts of the ISSOS experience.

A learning experience that goes beyond the classroom

Culturally diverse classrooms play an important role in helping students develop the skills they need for the future. From building empathy to encouraging critical thinking, the benefits of diverse classrooms reach far beyond academic learning.

At ISSOS, this diversity is carefully built into every part of the programme. By bringing together students from across the world and maintaining a balanced mix of nationalities, ISSOS creates an environment where students learn from each other as much as they learn from their teachers.

For parents looking to give their son or daughter an international experience, ISSOS offers the opportunity to learn in truly diverse classrooms, meet students from around the world, and build friendships that cross borders.
