"one hundred years from now it will not matter what kind of car I drove, What kind of house I lived in, Or how much money I had in the bank, The world will be a little better because I was important in the life of a child"

ISSOS Story

ISSOS was started with one clear mission: To create a safe place for people to learn and grow.

In 2005, ISSOS was established by Jen Munro, a St Andrews University Graduate, who after working as a summer camp counselor in the USA, realised she wanted to provide students from all over the world, with a balanced summer program. The quote above was handed to Jen by a child when she worked at camp and Jen realised she wanted to create a place where young people felt safe and could learn from one another.

ISSOS Time Line

2006 - ISSOS, St Andrews

St Andrews was the obvious choice for the first summer school due to its safe location and historical setting. The first session of ISSOS took place in 2006, with 50 students.

2011 - ISSOS, Cambridge

In 2011, with growing demand for the format of summer program, the international mix of students and the selection of academics and electives offered, ISSOS Cambridge was launched at Queens' College at Cambridge University. ISSOS established two amazing UK based homes in St Andrews and Cambridge universities, both chosen due to their safe location and world renowned reputations.

Students have always been at the heart of everything we do and we have listed to feedback from students, parents and teachers to develop all aspects of the company, fast becoming recognised as one of the top International Summer Schools.

2016 - ISSOS at Yale

In 2016 we launched our third campus at Yale University in the USA. Having spent time talking with students and parents who wanted to experince and American University and who constantly requested that there was an ISSOS in the USA we decided to look for a safe, historic, world renowned location and we found it at Yale University. Taking our most popular academics and electives and making sure we had a balanced summer school staff, a mix of American and British staff we launched Yale in July 2016 with a Kilted piper at the front of Trunbull College to welcome students, many of whom were returning to ISSOS for the third time but the firts time in the US.

Staying true to our Scottish roots we have some unique ISSOS traditions that exisit in all our campuses; Students and staff join a Scottish clan and compete over three weeks in their clans, we run Scottish Dancing as an evening program, students are welcomed by a piper and we always pipe in a Haggis on the final night for dinner.
